Terre Haute Celebrates Eldora Brown Day

Eldora Brown has been with our Community Center from the beginning. She started in the kitchen lovingly preparing meals and then when we needed a volunteer coordinator she, thankfully was willing to fill the shoes of that difficult task, a job she performed flawlessly. Even with the many hours she spent coordinating volunteers, she occasionally found herself back in the kitchen happily preparing meals. Eldora's compassion for the children and her appreciation and respect for the volunteers is an important part of the success of the Community Center. We are all saddened by her recent illness, her pain is not great but she is rapidly losing her mobility. She is unable to spend very much time at the Center, and the joy of her presence is greatly missed. We wish her the best and remember her in our prayers. On November 19, 2002 the City of Terre Haute recognized her value to the community by declaring it to be Eldora Brown Day. A ceremony covered by both of the local television stations was held at the mayor's office. Eldora was overwhelmed by the attention and when asked why she did it she simply said, "Because God called...I simply answered." God bless you Eldora...we love you.

Commodity Day at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard

Commodity day was very stressful. After finding out the night before at 9:30 pm commodities would be arriving around 1:00 pm today, we panicked because we had not lined up help ahead of time. At one point the help consisted of two 50+ women, one 70+ woman and a very reluctant husband.
Don Peters arrived with a very large open trailer filled with cases of food. Miraculously, a few people arrived who had responded to frantic pleas on their answering machines. The work began and work it was. Counting, dating, lifting, carrying up and down stairs, pushing, pulling, and hauling are all words to describe our efforts on commodity day. Not a fun day but all necessary in order to provide for the needs of this community. We are all exhausted but through all the wonderful efforts of these volunteers, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard is up and going for another day of giving to the hungry households through 14th and Chestnut Community Center.

DIVA Girls is aimed at elementary school children, and is an offshoot of Excellence is My Presence, a self respect project for high schools that Craig does as a part of her work with the Vigo County Minority Health Coalition. Despite the program's name, Craig addresses the participants as "young ladies" and the ladies are getting the message. " The biggest thing I learned was to respect other people and their property and respecting myself," said Lisa Grinstead, a seventh grader at Chauncey Rose Middle School. This program provides the experiences that the girls need to learn about caring for others and learning to respect their bodies.
